Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Florida

The twin islands ofSanibel and Captiva Islandsoff the coast of Ft. Myers insouthwest Floridamight be one of our favorite East Coast vacation spots in paradise.

Cut in two decades ago by a hurricane, the dolphin-shaped island is separated by a tiny bridge, so it’s just a stone’s throw between the two.

With its rustic, natural setting, Sanibel and Captiva offer romantic weekend getaways and family fun in equal measure.

Not only is Sanibel renowned for itsfamous shelling beaches, but the wildlife viewing is also pretty incredible with daily sightings of wading and shore birds and dozens of live shells that will roll across your feet at the beach (always throw them back — it’s against the law to take home live shells).

For an up-close view of Sanibel’s natural world, rent a kayak and explore theJ. N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Preserve, where you’re likely to see dozens of birds, alligators, and other local critters.

On Sanibel and Captiva, it’s more about what you won’t find that draws visitors to keep coming for generations. There are no fast food chains, no high-rise hotels (nothing taller than a palm tree is allowed by law), and very little nightlife other than the typicalsalty beach barhere and there.
